Saint Thomas Aquinas, a 13th-century Dominican friar, sought to harmonize Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology, an ambitious project that resulted in a profound and complex insight into the human mind. Aquinas conceived of the mind, or rational soul, as an immaterial entity and, at the same time, the substantial form of the human body, a vital principle that animates and organizes existence. Endowed with an agent intellect, the mind would have the capacity to abstract universal concepts from sensitive images, enabling intellectual knowledge. The philosopher distinguished three main faculties of the mind: the intellect, responsible for the knowledge of truth; the will, which drives the desire for good; and memory, which retains past experiences. Regarding knowledge, Aquinas argued that it begins with sensory perception, but reaches its peak with intellectual abstraction, allowing the understanding of the essence of things. Through analogical reasoning, the mind would be able to glimpse a limited knowledge of God, the first cause of everything. The search for happiness, for Aquinas, unfolds on two levels: natural happiness, achieved by the realization of intellectual and moral capacities through virtue, and supernatural happiness, eternal bliss, a divine gift that transcends human nature. The relevance of Aquinas’ thought continues over time, influencing contemporary debates about the nature of the mind and consciousness. His works, such as the Summa Theologica and the Commentary on Aristotle’s De Anima, continue to be the object of study and reflection.

“THE MIND OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS” invites the reader to explore the rich tapestry of thought of one of the greatest intellectuals of the Middle Ages.
